PIF Advice for Pet Retailers during Covid-19 Outbreak

Pet retailers have a crucial role to play to the millions of pets and their owners during this Covid-19 outbreak and have been declared an essential retailer in the government's guidance on premises which may remain open during this period of lockdown.

The measures pet retailers must adopt are:

1) Limiting customers in your shop at any one time (the exact number is difficult to determine as it depends on the size of the shop; but decision should be based on being able to maintain protocols in point 2).

2) Asking customers to observe a 2m distance from any other people, including other customers and shop staff

3) Adopting queue control measures outside the premises.

In addition, to help prevent the tranmission of the virus, pet retailers should also consider the following hygiene protocols:

4) Card payments only to be taken

5) Hand sanitiser provided to be used upon arrival and upon leaving (to reduce the risk of any handled products being exposed to the virus)

6) Door handles, doors and payment areas should be disinfected regularly.

All customers should be made aware of these protocols verbally and with notices in the shop.

Pet retailers are classed as an essential business during this time of lockdown and so may continue to operate to provide food and ancilliary products to pet owners.
